About the Shadow Wolves

The Shadow Wolves were founded in 1972 under a program created by the U.S. Congress to track drug smugglers transporting contraband -- mostly marijuana -- on Indian reservation lands. The Shadow Wolves say their name refers to the way the group hunts, like a wolf pack. If one wolf finds prey, it will call in the rest of the pack.

The team is responsible for patrolling the Tohono O'odham lands in southern Arizona, and is the Customs Service's only American Indian tracking unit.

They have high-tech equipment like night-vision scopes and global positioning satellite locators, but they prefer to use traditional skills. The Shadow Wolves use skills that have been passed down over centuries, from generation to generation. The unit continues that tradition, with the more experienced members teaching the younger ones how to track.

The Shadow Wolves have traveled to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia to train customs officials, border guards, and national police in those countries to detect and follow the tracks of people who may be transporting components of weapons of mass destruction.

In its January 2003 feature article about the Shadow Wolves, Smithsonian Magazine described the unit as "possibly the world's best trackers" using "time-honored techniques" to pursue drug smugglers. The magazine reports that in a one-year stretch between 2001 and 2002, the Shadow Wolves seized 46,000 kilos of illegal drugs, nearly half of all the drugs intercepted by the Customs Service in Arizona.

The National Strategy for Homeland Security and the Homeland Security Act of 2002 served to mobilize and organize our nation to secure the homeland from terrorist attacks.

Tohono O'odham Reservation stretches 90 miles across the southern boundary of Arizona, the reservation actually extends into northern Mexico, too.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Department of Homeland Security, is establishing a new frontline officer position, the CBP Officer, to serve at the Nation's ports of entry and provide the American public, travelers and the international trade community with "one face at the border."

The man at the top of the maze depicts birth. By following the white pattern at the top, the figure goes through the maze encountering many turns and changes as in life. As the journey continues, one acquires knowledge, strength and understanding. Nearing the end of the maze, one retreats to a small corner of the pattern before reaching the dark center of death and eternal life. Here one repents, cleanses, and reflects back on all the wisdom gained. Finally pure and in harmony with the world, death and eternal life are accepted.
